Envisioned as an integral part of the revitalization of downtown Poughkeepsie, the McCann Foundation and Trust first explored the concept of the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in 1970. Major funding for the construction of the building was contributed by, the Mair, the McCann, and the Cuneen-Hackett Foundations, as well as by banks, industries and individuals. Construction of a facility housing an NHL size ice arena and an auditorium/exhibit space with a capacity of 3,000 was begun in 1975. In December of 1976 the building opened with a gala celebration and performance by the Hudson Valley Philharmonic. In October for 1997 the Center celebrated 20 years of successful operation.

The mission of the Center, "To contribute to the growth of the community and enhance our lives recreationally and culturally", is fulfilled annually. The Center is attracts over 300,000 persons per year to events. The event calendar includes weekly activities in the McCann Ice Arena, such as leagues, classes, and public skating. Events in Mair Hall include trade shows, banquets, seminars, and family entertainment shows and concerts, featuring world-renowned artists.
