Meltzer Woods is a 60 acre preserve located in Shelbyville. Purchased by CILTI in 2014, this property contained the last unprotected old growth forest remaining in Indiana. The property was opened to the public on May 19th, 2016.
The Indiana Bicentennial Nature Trust provided the leadership gift allowing the Central Indiana Land Trust to buy and forever protect and preserve the woods. Other major contributors are The Herbert Simon Family Foundation, Blue River Community Foundation, Indiana Heritage Trust and the Meltzer Family.
By definition, old-growth forests include trees more than 150 years old and have been relatively undisturbed for a century. Located 35 minutes from downtown Indianapolis.
