About Us:

This branch library continues to be a gathering place for the ever growing community of Magnolia and southwest Montgomery County.  In the Fall of 2010, the tax office was relocated and the Malcolm Purvis Library expanded into the entire 9,800 square feet of its current location.  The library’s customers browse a collection of nearly 70,000 items, with resources in all popular formats, and enjoy a variety of programs for all ages.  During Fiscal Year 2012, the Malcolm Purvis Library circulated 121,588 items and welcomed more than 90,000 visitors.

History:

In July, 1985, the Magnolia Branch Library was opened in a 2,800 square foot room in the Southwest County Annex.  Six years later, voters passed a bond supporting an upgrade in library services.  The bond included funds for the construction of a new county building to house an 8,000 square foot library and a tax office in Magnolia.  Ground breaking for the new facility at 510 Melton Street was held in February 1997.  The branch library was renamed to honor Malcolm Purvis, a great supporter of reading and education, who served three terms as Montgomery County Commissioner.  On November 22, 1997, grand opening activities were held for the Malcolm Purvis Library-Magnolia Branch.
