History

The Louise C. Murdock Theatre was built as an addition to the Victorian-era 20th Century Center building in 1931. Named after the founder of the 20th Century Club and a prominent local figure, Louise C. Murdock, the theatre served as a performing arts center and lecture hall in its early days.

Wichita Film Festivals, Inc., a non-profit organization, acquired the Murdock Theatre in 2004 and began renovations to the theatre as well as the rest of the 20th Century Center building. The latest upgrades include a new 25' x 16' screen, a state-of-the-art digital projector, and Dolby surround sound, all purchased specifically to host The Met: Live in HD.

Throughout the renovations, great care has been taken to ensure the historic integrity of the building remain intact. Particularly impressive to the theatre are its original frescoes, art deco chandeliers, shuttered windows, and grand balcony.

Since its 2005 grand re-opening, the Louise C. Murdock Theatre has hosted an ambitious film program as well as many live theatre and music events. The Louise C. Murdock Theatre continues to showcase a diverse portfolio of subject matter that reflects the ever-broadening cultural diversity within the Wichita community.
