About Us:

In 1917, the Niles family of North Jay, had the Jay-Niles Memorial Library built in memory of their parents, Veranus and Mehitable Niles and in honor of their sister, Eliza. It was built for approximately $ 50,000 and housed about 1,000 books. Today it houses over 33,000 items and is worth in excess of $ 1,000,000 dollars.

In 1918, for the sum of $ 1.00 and other valuable considerations, the Niles family sold the library to the town of Jay and its' inhabitants, to be used as a public library.

Today, Jay-Niles Memorial Library is a small, progressive, public library housing a collection of over 33,000 items, including books, audio books, videos, DVD's, music CD's, large print books, magazines, a reference collection and other materials. It is a very active and social library circulating over 53,000 items a year to over 21,000 visitors.

The library houses 6 public computer terminals with internet access, one computer terminal dedicated to access of the library's collection and two terminals for circulation. The library has been fully automated since 1995.
