Hunting Island State Park

Hunting Island is South Carolina’s single most popular state park, attracting more than a million visitors a year, as well as a vast array of land and marine wildlife. Five miles of pristine South Carolina beaches, thousands of acres of marsh and maritime forest, a saltwater lagoon and ocean inlet are all part of the park’s natural allure.

Of all the lighthouses in South Carolina, the Hunting Island Lighthouse is the only one in the state that is publicly accessible. From the top of one of the most distinctive lighthouses in South Carolina, guests can stand 130 feet above the ground to take in the breathtaking, panoramic view of the Atlantic Coast and surrounding maritime forest.

Fishing Information: Guest enjoy fishing in Johnson Creek, the lagoon or surf fishing on the beach. Bait, equipment and other supplies can be purchased at the park store located in the campground.

Fishing Pier: The fishing pier, located at the southern tip of the park, extends 1,120 feet into Fripp Inlet. Pets are not allowed on the fishing pier.

Playground: A playground, for use specifically by campers, is located in the campground.

Swimming: Swimming is permitted in the Atlantic Ocean at your own risk. There is no designated swimming area and no lifeguards are on duty.

Bird Watching: The park is an ideal spot for birdwatching year round.

Other Facilities and Activities: There is a beach volleyball area available at the park and games and other items can be checked out from the visitor center.

Equestrian Trails: Equestrian beach access is available Dec., Jan. and Feb. A permit is required. Please contact the park for more information.

Hiking Trails: The Island Bike/Hike trail is 8 miles long and is open to both hiking and biking.

Walking/Nature Trails: The park walking/nature trails provide visitors an opportunity to experience the island’s natural environment. The three trails are: Campground Access trail (1 mile), Lighthouse Trail (0.3 mile) and the Marsh Boardwalk NRT (0.4 mile).

Biking Trails: The Island Bike/Hike trail is 8 miles long and is open to both hiking and biking.

CAMPING

Camping Information: Camping is available at the northern end of the park near the ocean. Each site has water and electrical hookups. The campground roads are paved while the sites are packed soil. Some sites accommodate RVs up to 40 ft.; others up to 28 ft. The campground is convenient to hot showers with restroom facilities.
