About
Gregory Ranch is our new, 26-acre estate vineyard in the rolling, sandy hills of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Planted by Bergström Wines club member Dr. Kenton Gregory and his family, Gregory Ranch’s viticulture and biodynamic programs have been managed by Josh Bergström and the Bergström Wines farming team since the vineyard’s inception in 2007.
Perched on the top of a 580-foot sandstone hillside, Gregory Ranch Vineyard sits where the Willamette Valley climbs up into the rugged Pacific Coast Mountain Range. The vineyard property sprawls through and around oak and Douglas fir trees as well as Scotch broom, which paints the hillside bright yellow in the spring. The vineyard itself features four distinct vineyard exposures: a south-facing, amphitheater-like bowl planted to four different Pinot Noir selections; a west-facing Chardonnay slope that benefits from late summer afternoon sunshine; a fully exposed crest atop the hillside Pinot Noir block; and a steep, east-facing flank of Pinot Noir vines. These four different expressions of the hillside make for a very complex vineyard that promises to showcase the best of this great appellation.
We call Gregory Ranch Vineyard a “ranch” because, along with vines, it also harbors an expansive stand of thickly planted Douglas fir trees and is home to a wild herd of elk and pheasants as well as Oregon’s famous black truffles. Additionally, we have plans to create a lake that will be stocked with fish and shrimp so that this great property will someday become a culinary paradise where we can truly explore the possibilities of pairing food and wine from a single great terroir. We have even milled some of the oak trees removed for vineyard development for eventual use as the staves for oak tanks and barrels. When used for fermenting and ageing wines from this site, they will become a further testament to our desire to explore all the potential expressions of terroir from this special vineyard.
Wines from Gregory Ranch Vineyard are soil-driven with dark fruit aromas of black cherry, blackberry and blueberry as well as wild dried mushroom, cinnamon, tobacco and meat notes. Sweet baking spices, characteristic of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, are also present, lending sweetness and lush textures. Our release of the first Bergström Wines Gregory Ranch Pinot Noir will be from the 2010 vintage.
