Theater History

In 1987, members of the famed comedy troupe THE GROUNDLINGS (whose alumni include such comedic luminaries as Will Farrell, Conan O’Brien, Lisa Kudrow, Chris Kattan, Cheri Oteri, Michael McDonald, Phil Hartman, Kathy Griffin, Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Ruebens, Jon Lovitz and Julia Sweeney) made the trek to New York City to establish a new outpost.

This intrepid group of comic writers and performers were led by current Board member and Director of Corporate Entertainment, Hilaury Stern. Within a few short years the group had grown into a new name, one more suited to its new locale: GOTHAM CITY IMPROV.

For years, Gotham City Improv has been known for its inventive and wildly funny improv and sketch shows, its superior training program, and as a leader in the field of corporate entertainment.

We have trained working actors and writers like Jennifer Coolidge (American Pie, Legally Blond, Best in Show), Missi Pyle (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish), Mary Birdsong (Reno 911!), Chad Taylor (host, TBS’ Man Made Movie), Mike Price (Executive Producer, The Simpsons) and Jenny Bicks (Executive Producer, Sex and the City, Men In Trees).
