Gaslight Theater has undergone many changes since its inception in 1937. Originally known as the Augusta Players, Gaslight began as an outgrowth of a women's theater class held at the Augusta YMCA by Maybelle Tarr. Ms. Tarr directed our first production, Arms and the Man, in 1938. In 1946, a subgroup called the Kerosene Circuit was formed to tour central Maine during the summer. In 1979, the Augusta Players moved to our present location at Hallowell City Hall and adopted the name Gaslight Theater. Gaslight produces four regular shows in Hallowell each year, plus special events off-site. For a more detailed history of Gaslight, including a play-by-play production history,
