Fowler Project Space is an exhibition space located within Fowler Arts Collective, an artist-run organization established in the summer of 2010 and located on the industrial edge of the East River in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. In order to highlight our innovative exhibitions program, this website, separate from the Collective website, will be focused entirely on the artists that are working and producing exhibitions in our dedicated gallery space. The Project Space program at Fowler concentrates on exhibiting collaborative, self-directed shows between emerging artists from New York City and beyond. Fowler is fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas, meaning we function as a non-profit organization. Partially in response to the limitations of traditional commercial galleries, Fowler exists to support and challenge the artists working within its walls. In today's art community, emerging artists often do not have the opportunity to organize and produce comprehensive exhibitions of their own work. This can be a valuable experience: one that instills confidence and personal responsibility for the presentation of artwork to an outside audience.
In order to exhibit in Fowler's project space, artists must submit a proposal for an exhibition to be reviewed by Fowler's Board of Directors. If the proposal is accepted, the group of artists organizes and installs their own exhibition with no curatorial input from the Board. The gallery space at at Fowler represents an equal collaboration between the artists and the uniquely raw gallery space itself. In order to benefit as many artists as possible, our gallery program is focused primarily on exhibiting emerging artists who do not have studios in our space. We also do not normally accept proposals for solo exhibitions. We are accepting proposals for our 2014 and 2015 gallery programming. Contact us here to learn more about proposing an exhibition.
The Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn is filled with artists and arts organizations of all kinds, but in recent years it has lacked a cohesive gallery and arts scene. With this in mind, Fowler's director, Lia Post, has co-organized, with Scott Chasse of Calico Gallery, Greenpoint Gallery Night: a recurring series of events linking the numerous art spaces located in this historic part of North Brooklyn.
