Excelsior Springs (Public) Golf Course opened in 1915. The original 36 hole complex dropped to 18 holes during the Great Depression. Those original 18 holes are still in place today. This Championship 6603 yard par 72, was designed by renowned golf course architect, Tom Bendelow, who also designed Medinah Country Club, home of the 1949, 1975, & 1990 U.S.Opens as well as Olympia Fields Country Club, where they hosted the 1928 and 2003 U.S.Open and two past PGA Championships. Excelsior Springs Golf Course offers rolling hills, elevation changes, huge mature trees and nature at its finest, as their are few homes that outline its boundaries. Excelsior Springs G.C. and it's storied history, have been visited by the likes of the following famous personalities; from the boxing community, Jack Dempsey and Jess Willard; baseball's Ban Johnson and Charles Comiskey; golfing amateur great, Charles "Chick" Evans, U.S.Open Champions, Lawson Little (1940), Johnny Goodman (1933), as well as Jimmy Thompson and Horton Smith and most recently,current and past PGA Tour players, Tom Watson, Payne Stewart and Tom Pernice.
