Track History
Historic Coles County Speedway- The oldest micro sprint track in the United States.....
In 1956, 7 insightful racing enthusiast decided to form the Coles County Modified Midget Racing Association. Each member donated $25 each and the club was born. They were hard-working men that loved the sport of then called Micro Midgets. They had the foresight to see that the future was bright for the racers in the central Illinois area. Thus, CCMMRA established.
The club's first racetrack, an 1/8 mile dirt oval, was called Coles County Fairgrounds. The track was located at the sale barn and was commonly referred to as the New Sale Barn Track. 1957 thru 1959, the track was located on the property of Monte Popham. In 1957 the track held the State Championship, won by Dave Moon of Warrensburg. Popularity increased dramatically after this race and it was not uncommon to see crowds of more than 1000 people each week. in 1960, the club purchased the ground that the is now the present site of the Speedway!
We are grateful to the original 7 and to all the people that followed them for having the same foresight to see how Micro Sprint racing would grow.
We vow to keep this great legacy going and to keep the same vision as the original 7 as we take Coles County Speedway into the next chapter of its long historic life!!
