Bridgeport Country Club was originally established in 1966 as Bridgeport Golf & Country Club. It was the idea of Dr. David Bryant and Wilson Ray, both of Bridgeport, Texas. In 1964, they purchased 86 acres, created a Board of Directions, hired a lawyer, and applied for the charter. The first Board meeting was held on August 18, 1964 informing the board that the land had been purchased, a corporation had been formed, the charter was received, and Jack Johnson, a local golf pro was hired.
Construction began and men from all walks of life came to volunteer their knowledge and labor. Most of the men who worked on the course had other jobs to work at and could only work in their spare time. Bert Hawkins of Hawkins Funeral Home donated an awning for shade, since there was not a Club House at that time. In 1966, Carlos Mann and Charles Harris built the first Club House. Lumber and other miscellaneous items were donated for the Club House. When it was completed, A.J. Baker purchased second-hand furniture from the Wichita Club and some of the leather chairs and oak tables are still being used today.
Jack Johnson, the first Golf Pro hired actually designed the course. His intelligence can be seen in the lay of all of the fairways and the contour of the greens within the 86 acres if the course. One major decision he had to make was to determine where the Club House should be, so it could accommodate the number one tee box and the number nine green.
The Grand Opening was held the third week of November in 1966. It was a gala affair and there were Oil Belt Tournaments played in surrounding towns which included Bowie, Decatur, Jacksboro, and Nocona.
Our name was eventually changed to Bridgeport Country Club and our original Club House was rebuilt in 2006. We invite you to come join us at our historical and beautiful Country Club!
