The Alter Brewing vision began way back in 1992 when the first batch of home brew was made in a ceramic coated brew pot on the stove top of a Chicago north side city apartment. Like any home brewer things began simply, and like many of them those days of stove tops, plastic bucket fermenters and soaking bottles in the bathtub ignited a spark. Fast forward.
The year was 2013. In the burgeoning suburb of Downers Grove, IL a dream was given life. Three men with a passion for beer came together and began laying the foundations for a new brewery. Over the course of two years they labored with research and experimentation, seeking out the best equipment, suppliers and people to begin realizing their vision.
Then in 2015, building upon a passionate love for the beer industry and its people, as well as formal brewing education at the Siebel Institute, BJCP Certification, Cicerone CBS and on the job training at breweries across the country, Alter Brewing Company was born.
About the Brewery
We source our raw materials and supplies from all over the world. When possible, we also partner with local farmers who use our spent grain for livestock feed so we are able to help out our brothers in the community and minimize our carbon footprint by not shipping this grain to landfills.
Our Brew House was manufactured right here in the Heartland! The shiny tanks and process piping you see in our brewery were manufactured by W.M. Sprinkman Corporation with virgin U.S. Stainless Steel in Franksville Wisconsin, located just an hour and a half from our home. Serious process engineering at play here!
