Mission:
The African Art Museum of Maryland is dedicated to collecting, exhibiting and preserving the art of Africa. Further, the Museum is dedicated to increasing the awareness of African art and culture while encouraging a broader understanding and deeper appreciation of the diverse art and culture of the continent of Africa.
The Museum supports its mission through exhibits, in-museum and outreach tours with video presentations (the African Experience Tour), lectures, films, tours to Africa, youth and adult workshops, academic courses, dance and music performances, visiting scholars and school and community outreach programs.
Goals:
1. Exhibit African art in its diversity and in relation to cultures that create it for enhanced knowledge and viewing pleasure
2. Engage in research and produce publications reflecting African art and culture for the purpose of complementing and enhancing museum and outreach activities
3. Offer effective and varied events/activities which allow opportunities for Increased knowledge and appreciation of African art and culture
4. Remain a valued resource as it serves the Museum's broad and diverse audience
5. Add to the Museum's collection of valued artworks and appeal to all.
