Adventist GlenOaks Hospital

History:

In the early 1970’s, when there were no physicians practicing in Glendale Heights, area leaders rallied to develop a hospital to provide much needed healthcare services to the community. In June 1973 the Illinois House approved a Certificate of Need that allowed construction of a hospital in Glendale Heights. In the mid 1970’s, local residents formed the Glendale Heights Community Hospital Auxiliary and held fundraisers in anticipation of construction. As support for the hospital grew, developer Harold Reskin donated five acres of land and the hospital purchased the other 10 acres of land that originally housed the childhood home of Merle Reskin, a founding father of Glendale Heights.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the hospital occurred on December 18, 1977 and Adventist GlenOaks Hospital officially opened as Glendale Heights Community Hospital on March 9, 1980. As local residents began to turn more and more to the hospital for their healthcare needs, in May 1989 the Glendale Heights Community Hospital name was changed to GlenOaks Medical Center in order to appeal to a broader range of people in communities surrounding Glendale Heights.

In recognition of the hospital’s dedication to serving the healthcare needs of the community, in 1997 GlenOaks Medical Center joined what is now known as Adventist Midwest Health and Adventist Health System, one of the nation’s top ten health systems. In November 2004 the hospital’s name was changed to Adventist GlenOaks Hospital. Through our Adventist Health System affiliation, Adventist GlenOaks Hospital differs from other hospitals and healthcare systems in that we seek to not only treat disease, but to prevent suffering by creating an environment of support for the whole person, addressing physical, mental and spiritual needs.

Our mission is Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ. We live our mission every day by striving to meet or exceed the expectations and service standards of our industry. We are sensitive to the needs of the individuals and families we serve and meet their needs with kindness and empathy. Although our mission is a Christian mission, we value the diversity of our patients, students, staff, physicians, colleagues and the community and treat them with respect regardless of their background, race, religion or culture.
