After years of using a single income threshold across the entire state for the Senior Property Tax Exemption program, the Legislature recently agreed to index that income limit by each county. For thousands of King County homeowners, this opens the door to potential property tax relief that could save you thousands on your tax bill.

The income limit is now $58,423. This allows more people to be eligible for these programs.

To qualify, you will need to meet the following criteria:

Age/Disability

  • Born in 1959 or earlier, or
  • Disabled and unable to work in 2019 or earlier
  • Veteran at least 80% disabled, according to the Veterans Administration.

Ownership/Occupancy

  • Own the residence as of 12/31/2020
  • Occupy as a primary residence for 9 months each year

Income (earned in 2020)

  • Annual household income under the new threshold of $58,423 including Social Security and other sources (RCW 84.36.383(5))

And King County has made it easier and faster to apply for this program.

You can go online here. To get more information or assistance with your online application, you can email exemptions.assessments@kingcounty.gov or call 206-296-3920.

We want to thank King County Assessor John Wilson for his leadership on this issue. We know how crucial this tax relief program is to keep seniors in the home they love.
