In an inspiring display of community spirit and dedication, our AARP York County Volunteer Team, along with Continental Paper Grading and the York County Food Bank, recently held a shredding event that not only protected the privacy of participants but also supported local food security initiatives. This year, the event saw a significant increase in both participation and impact, demonstrating the power of community involvement.

410 community members participated—an increase from 361 in 2023—the team was able to shred an impressive 26,600 pounds of paper, surpassing last year’s total of 21,000 pounds. This substantial effort helps prevent identity theft and promotes recycling, showing the community's commitment to environmental sustainability as well as reinforcing AARP’s Fraud Watch efforts in acting as a “fierce defender.”

Furthermore, the event also served as a food drive that yielded remarkable results. The York County Food Bank collected 2,212 pounds of food, substantially more than the 1,400 pounds collected the previous year. Additionally, the generosity of participants shone through in the monetary donations received, which more than tripled from last year.

This event not only highlighted the dedication of the 14 volunteers who surpassed last year’s efforts but also strengthened the bonds within the community, showing how collective actions can lead to substantial positive outcomes for both people and the planet.
