Why volunteering isn’t just important, it’s essential

The last few years have been waves of change that many of us may have been overwhelmed by. Many of us are still currently facing this change in our homes, schools, and communities. In our schools especially, we see issues around funding, lack of access to resources, teacher shortages, and more. Students also face factors outside of school that can impact their learning and achievement, like food scarcity, transportation to school, and other basic needs that can influence their performance in school. Because of these different factors, the opportunity gap is something that students face in our school systems.

The opportunity gap is the way that uncontrollable life factors like race, language, economic, and family situations can contribute to lower rates of success in educational achievement, career prospects, and other life aspirations. This can impact people on an extensive level, but it is not hopeless. We can help close this gap in our schools by providing equitable resources, opportunities, and working together. Ensuring students have the support they need to succeed with foundational reading skills is one of the greatest ways we can empower our communities. When students grow and learn, communities thrive. There is much that needs to be accomplished to truly close this gap. Such as increasing culturally responsive teaching practices, better access to resources or technology, and providing enriching learning opportunities. We can each find our own ways to make an effort and grow together.

At Reading Partners, our volunteers are these people and they take action and make waves in the schools in which they live and serve. We know that the ability to read transforms lives and empowers students and communities. Without the support of our amazing volunteers, there would be no way we could support as many students as we do. Every one of us has a part in closing the opportunity gap and we have amazing people stepping up every day to do just that.

Because of our volunteers, we continue to exist and empower our communities. Our work with students impacts them beyond the classroom and the time of service. When community members who volunteer find a place to connect with people and the people around them in a safe and welcoming environment we see the change start to happen: Students grow confidence and reach their literacy goals, and volunteers' confidence and learning grow as well. There is a ripple effect and each volunteer gets to engage in that adventure.

While there is still so much change and challenge occurring around us, let's hold a safe space together for positivity, learning, and growth. Consider your essential part in the community and find a place to plug in to help create change. We welcome your partnership if you see a need here that you would like to help us fill. Know that we will also support your growth as an individual and as a volunteer. Let’s be empowered in action together for our community!
