West Virginia to Phase Out State Tax on Social Security Benefits

Posted on 03/31/21 by The AARP Bulletin

Thanks in part to the advocacy campaign by AARP West Virginia, Mountain Staters will enjoy a phaseout of a state tax on Social Security benefits.

Starting with the 2020 tax year, married couples making $100,000 or less (and single people making $50,000 or less) can exclude 35 percent of their Social Security benefits from their state taxable income. For the 2021 tax year, the amount will be 65 percent and by 2022 the benefits will be free of state tax.
