We're Seeking Passionate Advocacy Volunteers

Did you know that 28% of adults in Louisiana — nearly 973,000 people — are family caregivers? Every day, they provide largely unpaid and often unsupported care to older parents, spouses, and loved ones who want to remain independent and live at home.

In fact, family caregivers contribute an estimated $6.9 billion in unpaid care each year across our state. Their responsibilities go far beyond companionship. Caregivers assist with bathing and meal preparation, manage medications, arrange transportation, coordinate medical care, and handle complex health-related tasks — often with little or no formal training.

As Louisiana prepares for the 2026 legislative session, which begins in April, AARP Louisiana is seeking volunteer advocates to help ensure the voices of family caregivers are heard at the Capitol.

We are looking for caregivers and volunteers who are willing to:

• Share their personal caregiving stories with state lawmakers
• Reach out to their elected representatives
• Submit letters to the editor
• Help educate policymakers and the public on critical issues

No prior advocacy experience is required. AARP Louisiana provides training, both individually and in group settings, to ensure volunteers feel confident and prepared. AARP’s advocacy work focuses on improving the quality of life for residents age 50 and older, and it relies on passionate volunteers to drive change.
