Ways to Save at the Grocery Store

Posted on 10/17/22 by Juanita Jiménez-Soto

Rising prices are taking a toll on many budgets. Whether it's paying more at the pumps or shelling out more for those groceries, families are paying more to cover basic expenses and, at the same time, taking in less. Some people are clipping coupons while other consumers are waiting for sales to buy items they need and want.

SAVING Money at the Grocery Store

To help you cut costs, AARP Austin has developed a list of money-saving tips to keep more of your cash in your pocket.

  1. Use ground chicken instead of beef: Using chicken for beef can help cut costs. While the price of poultry increased, just like beef and veal, it is still more affordable.
  2. Plan your meals: Planning out the week's meals and buying food from a shopping list based solely on that plan is a proven way to cut costs. Friday is a great day for planning, as many stores post their week's discounts and deals that day or the day before.
  3. Compare prices: Flipp is a free app that joins retail circulars in your area. Just download the app and set your zip code to find store circulars. The app will make it a snap to compare your shopping list to circulars from your local supermarkets. You can also generate a shopping list on the app.
  4. Establish a "pantry cooking" night: Reports indicate Americans throw away 30 to 40 percent of our food supply because it goes uneaten and spoils. The solution is to cook at least one meal weekly based on foods in your refrigerator or pantry.
  5. Create a "must eat soon" spot in your fridge: Place leftover foods or items you should eat before fresher foods on a designated shelf in your fridge.
