Walking Groups Put Soul in Their Steps

Posted on 12/31/17 by TheAARPBulletin, AARP Blog Author

With the start of the New Year, Compton residents can launch a healthy new habit. Beginning in January, AARP in Los Angeles will host an LA Soul Steppers walking group in the Hub City the first Thursday of every month.

“We are building on the success of the first LA Soul Steppers group in Baldwin Hills by bringing the same concept to Compton,” said Jennifer Hopson, AARP associate state director for multicultural outreach. “Walking groups help create more livable communities by providing physical activity and encouraging social interaction.”

The original group meets every second Tuesday at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza shopping mall for a walk indoors. Over the past year, participants have celebrated holidays such as Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day with contests and creative soundtracks, which they enjoy while walking.

LA Soul Steppers kicks off its first Compton walk at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4, at the park at the Center for Sustainable Communities, 1051 W. Rosecrans Ave. The walkers will warm up with light stretches led by local fitness expert Coach E. Organizers expect the new group will grow to have the same lively spirit and sense of fun as the Baldwin Hills walkers.
