VI VOTES: How AARP-VI is Helping Members’ Voices Count in the Upcoming Election

Posted on 09/19/22

AARP in the Virgin Islands wants its members to prepare for the November general election. Our members comprise a robust demographic of our territory’s voters; together, we can be the “deciders” in the 2022 elections. We need every candidate and lawmaker to commit to addressing the challenges facing people 50+. That’s why we are partnering with the Virgin Islands Disability Rights Center to present Voter Machine Demonstration and Registration Drives in St. Croix and St. Thomas to help educate and help Virgin Islanders commit to being a voice in the election.

On Tuesday, September 20, 2022, we will be in St. Croix at the Sunny Isles Shopping Center Pavilion from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Wednesday, September 21, 2022, VI Disability Rights Center will host the drive in St. Thomas also from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Tutu Park Mall. Many Virgin Islanders are still vulnerable to the health and financial threats of COVID-19, face retirement crises or struggle with prices at the stores and gas pumps. Your voices count. The upcoming drives will help residents and prospective voters understand that voting is more than just pulling a lever or filling a dot. Voting is understanding the language, knowing when and where to vote and why participation matters. Together, we all can play a part in the future of the Virgin Islands.

Also, for this election season, AARP-VI wants members to save the date and spread the word about its upcoming 2022 Gubernatorial Forum. Join us in partnership with WTJX - VI Public Broadcasting System (PBS/NPR) on Saturday, October 1, 2022, for a free in-person candidates forum at the University of the Virgin Islands. Meet us in the First Floor Conference Room of the Administration and Conference Center (ACC) of the Orville E. Kean Campus in St. Thomas to hear where the candidates stand on issues impacting Virgin Islanders. Doors open at 3:15 p.m. and the forum begins promptly at 4 p.m. There will be a free in-person watch party in St. Croix at the University of the Virgin Islands Great Hall for those who wish to view the forum in real-time. Space is limited, so please register here without delay.

AARP-VI calls on candidates to propose solutions for many of the challenges faced by our Virgin Islanders who are 50+. We look forward to joining our community and hearing about issues that are so important to our members and all generations, such as healthcare, financial security and livable communities. AARP-VI invites you to contact us at viaarp@aarp.org or visit https://states.aarp.org/virgin-islands to check out how we dedicate our work to enhancing the lives of our older community.
