VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES & PROGRAMS

Tabling

AARP shares resources and information about topics relevant to older adults in their own communities in spaces like farmers markets, resource fairs, or other gatherings. Volunteers can distribute information and talk to people of all ages at events, coordinate the logistics for tabling across the state, and train other volunteers on how to table effectively.

Speakers Bureau

AARP certified Speakers Bureau volunteers provide free virtual and in-person presentations about aging related topics to older adults across Massachusetts. Volunteers can speak on key topics like Social Security, retirement, caregiving, fraud and brain health, market the program, and if they do not feel like speaking, they can coordinate logistics for presentations & more. Click here to learn more.

Advocacy

AARP advocates for a range of issues that matter to older adults, from paying family caregivers to securing affordable housing for people to age in their communities. Volunteers can testify about issues that matter to them, attend virtual and in-person hearings, learn about bills, and reach out to their local officials.

Local Chapters
At the community level, AARP Chapters in Boston and Gardner enhance the quality of life for people as they grow older, further the independence and dignity of these individuals, and improve the image of aging. As change-agents, Chapters help assess the needs of people 50-plus, working positively with AARP to obtain constructive responses to those needs.

Literations
With programs in Boston and Framingham, Literations pairs highly trained volunteer literacy coaches (age 50+) with 1st-4th graders to deliver evidence-based, one-to-one literacy interventions. Students significantly improve their reading and social-emotional skills.

Volunteer Network
On the third Friday of each month, AARP MA hosts Volunteer Network meetings in Boston and Worcester with virtual/hybrid options as well. These meetings are an opportunity for all volunteers to share what they are seeing in their communities, connect with other volunteers, and partner with our staff to support planning and development of our volunteer programs. If you live outside of Boston or Worcester you are welcome to join the group of your choice.

Fraud Watch Network
With new scams popping up every day, AARP wants to help you protect your money. That’s why the AARP Fraud Watch Network equips people with up-to-date knowledge to spot and avoid scams sooner. We’re looking for volunteers like you to help. The AARP Fraud Watch Network needs people to help teach, give support, and help spread awareness.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program
Tax aide volunteers provide taxpayers, especially those who are above the age of 50 and earn low to moderate income, with tax preparation, free of charge. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest, free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service for low- and middle-income taxpayers who need help. You can find more information at www.aarp.org/taxaide

AARP Driver Safety
The AARP Driver Safety program is taught and administered by a nationwide network of AARP-trained volunteers and helps millions of drivers 50 and older stay safe on today’s roads. Driver Safety volunteers work to help drivers feel more confident and safer behind the wheel. You can find more information at www.aarp.org/drive.

Friendly Voices
We may be isolated, but we don’t have to be alone. Sometimes, just hearing a friendly voice on the other end of the line can help in challenging times. Become a trained AARP Friendly Voice volunteer and provide a call to say hello to those who could use one.

Strike Force Volunteer
We need help from local volunteers to educate, advocate, and connect with organizations and individuals across the Bay state about the importance of Social Security. Strike Forces work to make Social Security topics relevant to target audiences, including younger people or people of various races and ethnicities. Strike Force volunteers listen to communities, share resources, and play a critical role in helping ensure that Social Security will be solvent in the long term.
