Two localities in Arizona received 2019 AARP Community Challenge grants for projects to enhance safety, mobility and health for all residents.

The town of Payson is undergoing a historic Main Street revitalization. Its grant is funding a sidewalk with curb ramps, solar-powered crossing signs and a themed artistic design painted on the sidewalk.

The city of Tucson, along with the nonprofit Tucson Clean and Beautiful, won a grant to improve recreational opportunities at Esquer Park, adjacent to housing for older adults and people with disabilities. Park improvements include an accessible walking path with seating, interpretive signs about native plants and a dog comfort station.

Nationwide, AARP awarded nearly $1.6 million in grants to 159 projects.
