Tennis fun with AARP DC at the Citi Open

Posted on 08/06/19 by Emma Campbell

We had an amazing time at the Citi Open Tennis Tournament on Saturday, August 3, 2019!

Tennis Fun for All

The day began with an hour-long tennis lesson for 50 participants over 50! We were also excited to welcome some energetic and talented grandchildren to the clinic, too. Participants had fun playing tennis, and got serious when it came to learning tips and tricks from pro coaches Dr. Dave Marshall and Ellis Ferreira.

WJLA, DC’s ABC-affiliated television station, attended the clinic and provided coverage of it, including a brief interview with two of the attendees. Click here to watch the segment!

Following the clinic, attendees were treated to the day session matches, and even managed to get some photos with rising tennis stars (including Coco Gauff.)

With Age Comes Wizdom

AARP celebrates people who take risks and pursue dreams at any age. As such, AARP is proud to sponsor the Washington Wizards’ Wizdom Dance Team (a dance troupe cast from a field of 50-plus adults in the DC, Maryland and Virginia region). Ten of the Wizdom dancers entertained thousands of tennis enthusiasts with a performance between the first and second day session matches – a first ever dance performance on Citi Open’s center court!

Following their phenomenal performance, they were the stars of a pop-up dance party in the Amstel Light Beer Garden. The dance team engaged attendees to dance for a chance to win a pair of tickets to a Washington Wizards game. Thirty dancers got in on the action, and two were selected for the prize.

Fun and Purpose

Also, in the afternoon, AARP DC Associate State Directors Pete Rankin and Bobby Dorsey represented AARP DC at a mobile phone charging station where they highlighted AARP’s national Stop Rx Greed campaign to lower prescription drug costs. More information about this campaign is available here.
