Tackling Myths About Social Security

Posted on 06/30/24 by The AARP Bulletin

During this election season, AARP is seeking to help residents separate fact from fiction about Social Security.

The issue is vital for 51 percent of Alabamians 65 and older who rely on the program for at least half of their annual income, according to recent data from AARP. The average retiree benefit in December 2022 was $1,781 a month. The hope is to “clear up the misconceptions,” says Candi Williams, state director for AARP Alabama.

“Social Security is your money,” she adds.

She urges people to find out candidates’ positions on Social Security.
