Support Service Members and Spot Veteran Scams

Posted on 10/31/18 by TheAARPBulletin, AARP Blog Author

On Saturday, Nov. 17, veterans are invited to join Operation Cold Front to obtain winter gear and advice on avoiding scams.

The event is hosted by Councilwoman Ana Sandoval and sponsored by AARP in San Antonio and VetStrong, a new local nonprofit that provides furniture to vets.

“We’re known for being Military City, USA,” Sandoval said. “We appreciate veterans’ service, so we tend to show it in different ways.”

In this case it is with Operation Cold Front, which will distribute free hats, gloves, coats, scarves and space heaters. Though San Antonio is known for having a warm climate, Sandoval said winters can be bitter.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at VetStrong, 1735 Babcock Road.

Donations of new winter wear (with tags) and automatic-shutoff space heaters can be made weekdays at Sandoval’s office, 4414 Centerview Drive, Suite 160. Or call 210-207-0870.

At the event, AARP will distribute handbooks on veteran-targeted scams as part of the association’s antifraud initiative.

Some schemes involve charging vets for access to records, claiming they can get extra benefits by changing investment portfolios, and callers who pretend to work for the VA asking for bank and credit card information.
