Looking to liven up your home this summer? Re-pave the driveway or cut down that tree you’re afraid will get knocked down in a storm? Beware of scam artist contractors.

When embarking on a home improvement project, it’s best to seek out a contractor instead of hiring someone who solicits you. Typically, sketchy contractors will knock on your door claiming to notice that you have a major problem that needs to be fixed immediately, and that they can fix it for a very reasonable price. The truth of the matter is that most home repairs aren’t emergencies, and most reputable contractors don’t have time to go door-to-door seeking out new customers. Take your time researching contractors and getting quotes before hiring. Unless your repairs are major (i.e. replacing a roof) and require a deposit, never hand over money for materials before a project is complete. By being cautious and knowing what to avoid, you can outsmart scammers this summer.
