Strengthening Our Beloved Communities on MLK Day
President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill into law on Nov. 2, 1983. And in 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday as a national day of service.
This means that the third Monday each January is not only a time to reflect on Dr. King’s monumental legacy, but it’s also a time to strengthen our communities. It’s a day we can move closer to his "Beloved Community."
Dr. King’s vision for a “Beloved Community” is a society based on justice, equal opportunity and love of one’s fellow human beings. The King Center explains:
“Dr. King’s Beloved Community is a vision in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood.”
So what can you do in our community on January 21st to contribute to Dr. King’s vision?
One way is to get involved with AARP. Volunteers fuel AARP’s community impact by donating their time, skills and passion to help others.
Not only will you be making a vital contribution to the community, you’ll experience the great feeling that comes from helping others. And you’ll be moving us one step closer to Dr. King’s “Beloved Community” vision.
