Stop Scams and Fraud at Free Shredding Events

Posted on 08/08/24 by Mary Michaels

Every two seconds in the US, someone's identity is stolen, resulting in tens of billions of dollars landing in the pockets of con artists. According to an AARP report, American adults lost a total of $43 billion to identity fraud in 2023.

Traditional identity fraud occurs when someone obtains someone else’s personal information, such as a Social Security number, home address, date of birth or bank account data, and uses it for fraud or other illicit purposes. A criminal may use your information to access your bank account, for instance, use your credit card for purchases or pretend to be you in order to open up a new credit card or bank account. Problems related to account takeovers and new-account fraud, where criminals use a victim’s personal information to open fraudulent new accounts, are also growing.

While online scams are common, it is possible for would-be criminals to get your personal information from documents discarded in the trash.

AARP South Dakota is here to help you prevent scams and fraud by offering free document shredding events in Sioux Falls, Aberdeen and Rapid City. Pack your old personal and financial documents to be securely shredded, free of charge.

Registration is not required for these events, but it will allow for faster drive-thru service.

Please bring items in plastic bags, not cardboard boxes, for quick and secure shredding. Garbage services will not be available on-site.
