Spur Change by Advocating for Older Iowans
AARP Iowa relies on its Grass Roots Election and Advocacy Team (GREAT) volunteers to be the boots on the ground across the state, telling lawmakers about legislation and policy concerns.
To advocate for topics important to older Iowans, the state organization is seeking to recruit at least one GREAT member in each of the state’s 50 Senate districts and 100 House districts.
Whether it’s attending a coffee meeting or legislative forum with local representatives, writing a letter to the editor, showing up for AARP’s Lobby Day in Des Moines in February or telling a personal story about high prescription-drug costs, GREAT members can participate in advocacy in many ways.
Previous advocacy, lobbying or government experience is not necessary. What matters is the desire to influence change and make a difference locally. Training is provided to all volunteers.
Volunteers are also needed for Iowa’s four congressional districts, to focus attention on federal issues such as Social Security, Medicare and lower drug costs.
