To show its support for our veterans, the AARP Las Cruces Chapter hosted a special dinner, coinciding with Flag Day, June 14, for those who have served in the military and their families. The event was held at the El Caldito Kitchen in Las Cruces.

“These events are fun, and we are proud to show support and give our thanks to our local veterans,” said Judy Cota, Chapter President.

There were 80 veterans and family members in attendance. Speakers included Las Cruces Mayor Eric Enriquez and a color guard started the event off. Chapter members also provided information from AARP’s Veterans, Military and their Families department, which provides information on resources for veterans. Several volunteers from the Kitchen and fifteen-chapter members cooked and served the meal with tables decorated in red, white, and blue, with flags and flowers. The dinner consisted of roast pork, green beans, salad, potatoes, dessert, and drinks. Music was provided by chapter member Judy Chavarria.

Abel Chavarria, the chapter lead in veterans’ events, thanked the volunteers for all their help, which included four children from a local service organization and their
