Small Business Owners Support Alaska Work and Save

Many hard-working Alaskans struggle to save up for retirement. Almost 73% of workers at Alaska businesses with under 10 employees, and 66% of companies with between 10-23 employees lack a plan. This often results in older workers feeling left in the lurch upon nearing retirement with not enough money to age the way they want.

Without retirement accounts, Alaskans rely even more on Social Security for support, but this alone is not enough to cover all the bills. Because of this, AARP supports the creation of Alaska Work and Save, a public-private retirement savings option that allows Alaskans to save up for retirement.

Alaska Work and Save provides a voluntary way for workers to decrease their reliance from Social Security easily and securely. It is overseen by the state and run by a private sector financial services provider. Additionally, workers own their own accounts, allowing them to take their savings from job to job and control their paycheck deductions. It’s a self-sustaining program with no ongoing costs for Alaska and it even saves state dollars by creating worker independence.
