Another year, another 750 pounds of food delivered to food banks in the Sheridan area, thanks to the generosity of area residents.

The Sheridan AARP Community Action Team and the Sheridan County Retired Educators Association collected 750 pounds of food during their annual Souper Bowl Food Drive last week in Sheridan. That is nearly identical to the amount of food collected a year ago, and 50 pounds more than the group took in during the 2018 Souper Bowl Campaign.

The food was donated from Jan. 27-31 and all food was given to the Salvation Army Food Bank and the People’s Assistance Food Bank.

The Souper Bowl, a project of Sheridan’s AARP Community Action Team and the Sheridan County Retired Educators Association is a one week blitz that encourages area residents to donate food into bins decorated by the Sheridan Retired Educators Association, which represent either the Kansas City Chiefs or San Francisco 49ers based on which team residents believe will win.

“This year was the closest score we have had since we started this food drive,” reports AARP Sheridan Action Team Member, Laurel Rogers. “After calculating food from baskets, The Kansas City Chiefs had 281 votes and San Francisco 49ers had 305 votes. There was lots of fun had by all. Thank you to our drop off locations.”

Food collection sites were located at the YMCA, Heritage Tower, the Hub, Elmcroft/Sugarland Ridge, and the John C. Schiffer Collaborative School. Several of the Sheridan AARP Action Team Members helped organize the food drive event including: Clarence Montano, Stella Montano, Laurel Rogers (event coordinator), Wayne Schatz (also a member of the Sheridan Retired Educators Association), JoAnn Forte’, Jerry Edwards and Nancy Drummond.
