Get your spring cleaning started and guard your identity by shredding unwanted documents. It’s easy to do and AARP in Houston is doing its part to help. They are holding a free paper shredding event so you can dispose of old sensitive documents in a safe way.

This service is valuable given that someone’s identity is stolen every two seconds. Shredding old documents is a good way to protect your identity because it keeps confidential information from getting into the wrong hands. It’s also one of the safest ways to dispose of personal papers.

AARP in Houston along with Mt. Canaan Baptist Church will be holding the free and open-to-the-public shredding event Saturday, April 27, at 7400 N. Wayside Drive, from 9 a.m. to noon. People will be able to bring up to three boxes worth of items to shred. Your documents will be shredded on site. All you will have to do is drive to the location, get in line and volunteers will be there to collect your boxes and dispose of them safely.

Rose Childress, an AARP Houston volunteer, says shredding is a quick and easy way to keep you and your identity safe.

“Identity theft is an issue with the community of all ages and fraudulent scams continue to be on the rise. It’s as easy as a person getting hands on one piece of your mail to get your name,” says Childress. “It’s important to make sure to securely dispose of documents.”
