Why hold a mayoral forum for the runoff?
- As a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, AARP does not endorse candidates. But we do want older adults to make their voices heard by voting. We provide trusted, up-to-date information on how, when, and where to vote, and offer opportunities, like this Mayoral Forum to see and hear the two final candidates.
- This will be the first time since voters amended the city’s charter in 2024 that the next mayor and council will serve a 4-year term instead of two. The next mayor’s decisions will shape our community for a longer period, so voters want to be informed.
- AARP Texas recently surveyed San Antonians, age 50 and over. Ninety-five percent said that it’s very important or somewhat important for the next mayor to take their opinions seriously. This Forum is a place where voters can make their voices heard.
- San Antonio voters, aged 50 and older, vote in high percentages and can decide elections. In the last 5 City Council elections (2015-2023), older San Antonian voters, on average, made up 73% of the voters who turned out to vote! This Forum is an opportunity to see and compare the candidates in person.
- AARP is a local advocate for livability issues, like safe walkable streets, transportation options and affordable housing. We have worked successfully with previous mayors on these issues. The next mayor can help make San Antonio a more livable and age-friendly city. The Forum is a chance for the candidates to let older voters and their families know where they stand.
AARP San Antonio hopes to see you at this important event to hear the top two mayoral candidates, one of whom will be our mayor for the next four years. Remember, our Mayoral Forum is free and open to the public, regardless of age. Register here to reserve your seat and free lunch at the Forum.
