Ret. Gen. Taguba in Jacksonville to Talk Caregiving for a Veteran
AARP Community Ambassador U.S. Army Ret. Gen. Antonio “Tony” Taguba for a informative discussion about caregiving for a veteran.
Gen. Taguba retired in 2007 after a 34-year military career and became a caregiver for his parents. The general’s caregiving journey began in 2006 when his mother, Maria, was diagnosed with cancer, then his father was diagnosed with dementia and heart disease. Like millions of caregivers nationwide, the Taguba family faced emotional, financial and physical strains while caring for both parents. The elder Taguba, Tomas, served in the military as a sergeant during WW II and escaped the Bataan Death March in 1942.
Being a career solider transitioning into the caregiving world, Taguba has a unique perspective on being a male caregiver and caring for a veteran. A recent AARP reports says 40 percent of caregivers in America are male and that the problems male caregivers face are often not publicly discussed.
