Reporter Alexa Ura Receives Honors from AARP Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – A demographics reporter who has covered voting rights issues in Texas is being honored by AARP Texas for producing impactful journalism projects that address the interests and needs of older Texans and their families.

Alexa Ura, a reporter for The Texas Tribune, investigated and wrote in 2022 numerous stories about elections and voting processes, including reports about how voting law changes restricted mail-in ballot voting in Texas. Ura’s investigative work and writing is colorful and insightful and has brought attention to complex details in an easy-reading manner. This is the second consecutive year that AARP Texas has recognized journalists for outstanding reporting in the public interest. Through this recognition, AARP Texas seeks to honor journalists whose work promotes awareness and understanding of older Texans and the issues that matter to them and their families.

“Alexa Ura has produced the kind of work this year that AARP Texas is proud to honor -- groundbreaking journalism that features great reporting, fine writing and expert data analysis,” said AARP Texas Director Tina Tran. “While the news business continues to face many challenges, it is uplifting to see that there is still outstanding work being done at news organizations in Texas. At AARP Texas, we greatly appreciate Alexa’s work and hope that it inspires other journalists to focus on the needs of the age-50-plus community.”

This year, a small team of AARP Texas staff and volunteers reviewed the work of journalists throughout Texas and chose Ura as most deserving of our honors. No monetary donations are involved in the recognition effort, though AARP Texas intends to provide Ura with keepsakes of nominal value. Works of journalism by both professionals and students were reviewed, including written news reports, broadcast stories, podcasts, photojournalism, and other forms of storytelling.
