AARP Gardening Classes at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Gardens


AARP in Springfield and the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center are working together to bring you some unique experiences in 2019! AARP is sponsoring free classes on a range of gardening topics and activities (some classes require a small materials fee). Classes started in April and run through the end of the year. Registration is required and space is limited.

Monarch Butterfly

May 11, 10-11 AM AARP in Springfield is pleased to present Planting a Butterfly Garden with Becky Day, Horticultural Interpreter.  Did you know you could help butterflies live and thrive in your own back yard?  Learn what to plant to attract butterflies to your yard.  You’ll also receive a free milkweed plant to take home!

June 12, 10-11AM AARP in Springfield is pleased to present Plant an Old Boot with Katie Keith, Botanical Center Coordinator.    Bring your own old boot and turn it into a planter!  This is a fun activity that’s good for all generations of your family! 

July 10, 10-11 AM AARP in Springfield is pleased to present Cut Flower Arranging for all Generations with Katie Keith, Botanical Center Coordinator.  Just bring your own vessel (a vase, a jar, or whatever) and learn how to make an attractive arrangement with flowers from the botanical gardens.  There is no cost, but you must bring your own vase/jar. 

August 7, 10-11 AM AARP in Springfield is pleased to present Intergenerational Fairy Gardens with Katie Keith, Botanical Center.  All you need is a little imagination to transform container gardens into miniature magical worlds for fairies!  Bring your own container and fill it with magic.  This activity is great for children and adults alike.  (Cost $5.00 to the Botanical Center)

September 26, 10-11 AM AARP in Springfield is pleased to present Monarch Butterflies with Lisa Bakerink, Executive Director for Friends of the Garden.  Tagging and tracking—learn how these beautiful butterflies migrate and how we know their patterns.  We might get to tag some butterflies too!

October 26, 10-11 AM AARP in Springfield is pleased to present Japanese Stroll Garden—A Guided Walk with Becky Day, Horticultural Interpreter.  Take a peaceful walk through the Japanese Stroll Garden with a guide from the botanical gardens.  This lovely and peaceful garden is an easy walk with lots of interesting features to explore. November 16, 10-11 AM AARP in Springfield is pleased to present Terrariums with Katie Keith, Botanical Center Coordinator. Want to keep some green around all winter long?  Bring your own container and make a terrarium!  An old fish bowl or a wide mouth jar can be your indoor winter green space.  (Cost $5.00 to the Botanical Center) Register now

December 14, 10-11 AM AARP in Springfield is pleased to present Wreaths and Centerpieces—Nature’s Ornaments with Katie Keith, Botanical Center Coordinator.  Make a 10” wreath, centerpiece, or candle ring with materials from the botanical gardens (Cost $10 to the Botanical Center) Register now
