Election Day in San Antonio is almost here. But you don’t have to wait until then to cast your ballot.
Early voting for local elections—including for mayor and City Council—goes through April 30. Election Day is Saturday, May 4.
The election for mayor and the city’s 10 council districts takes place every two years in May. Each position has multiple candidates running, including nine candidates for mayor. Click here to see a list of who’s running. A runoff election, if necessary, would take place June 8.
Two mayoral candidates—current Mayor Ron Nirenberg and District 6 council member Greg Brockhouse—recently took part in a debate sponsored by AARP Texas. Brockhouse and Nirenberg discussed issues important to voters 50-plus, including housing and transportation.
People age 55 and up accounted for about two-thirds of those who voted in Bexar County in the first round of voting in the 2017 local elections.
“Look, at the end of the day we have to recognize the role that persons over 50 play in our community. We’re living longer, we are going to be employed longer,” Brockhouse said, adding that “the things we do in City Hall need to reflect that.”
Nirenberg also touched on the subject of San Antonio residents working as they age.
“The La Vida Buena policy, the vision for making sure we’re an age-friendly community, cannot leave out the fact that we have a large and growing population that needs to have opportunities for employment later in life,” he said.
You can watch the entire debate featuring Nirenberg and Brockhouse below:
During early voting, you can vote at any of the available locations in Bexar County. This list provided by the Bexar County Elections Department shows when and where early voting will take place. The Department also has a handy map showing the different early voting locations.
If you opt to vote on Election Day, the Department has a tool where you can enter your date of birth and street number and find out your specific polling locations and what your ballot will look like. The tool also allows you to see if you’re registered to vote.
Now’s your chance to go vote and have the impact you’d like to see on your neighborhood and city.
