Every year on June 15th, communities around the globe come together to observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the abuse, neglect, and exploitation that many older adults face. Elder abuse is a significant issue that affects millions of older individuals worldwide, and WEAAD serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of protecting and respecting our elders.

Understanding Elder Abuse

Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, financial, and sexual abuse, as well as neglect. It often occurs in situations where there is an expectation of trust, such as within families or care facilities. Shockingly, as many as 1 in 10 older Americans experience some form of elder abuse each year, yet only a fraction of these cases are reported

The Importance of WEAAD

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was launched by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. The goal is to promote a better understanding of elder abuse and neglect by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic, and demographic factors that contribute to this issue

By shining a spotlight on elder abuse, WEAAD encourages communities to take action and support elder justice initiatives.

How You Can Help

AARP Alabama continues to work with our state's elected leaders to strengthen laws against elder abuse. Through those efforts, crimes which were once misdemeanors are now felonies. But it is up to all of us to report any potential elder abuse. The Alabama Department of Senior Services as well as local law enforcement are key resources to help facilitate elder abuse investigations.
