Protect the Troops: Ways to Combat Fraud on Veterans

Veterans report being the target of fraud attempts more than civilians do, according to a 2021 AARP survey — and they are also more likely to lose money in scams.

With Military Appreciation Month approaching in May, AARP South Carolina is highlighting a range of anti-fraud resources for veterans.

Visit aarp.org/vetsfraudcenter to find an online guide, “AARP Watchdog Alert Handbook: Veterans Edition.” It details scams directed at veterans and offers tips on how to avoid them.

Veterans are often targeted by criminals because of their access to government benefits, and many in the AARP study reported losing money by signing over their veterans pension or disability benefits. Learn more about AARP’s support for veterans at aarp.org/veterans.
