Preparing for the Inevitable: Tips for Dealing With Natural Disasters in Hawaii

Posted on 03/31/22 by The AARP Bulletin

Natural disasters are a part of life on the islands: Tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods and earthquakes can come at any time, and hurricanes may hit outside the traditional season.

To help residents prepare for the upcoming hurricane season, AARP Hawaii is hosting a series of Saturday workshops on Zoom and Facebook that will discuss how to devise emergency plans, prearrange communications and create emergency kits with two weeks of food, medicine and supplies—a must for an island state dependent on goods arriving by ship. The workshops include information for older people living alone and for caregivers, as well as for residents of high-rises and condominiums.
