Philadelphia Volunteers Spread Love and Friendship to Older Adults on Valentine’s Day

Posted on 02/26/24 by Yocasta Lora

In a heartwarming display of compassion and community spirit, fifteen AARP Philadelphia volunteers, under the guidance of Yocasta Lora, Associate State Director of Community Outreach in Philadelphia, joined forces to celebrate Valentine's Day with a mission to lessen feelings of loneliness among older adults.

Armed with 1,000 roses, the volunteers set out to various local communities in Philadelphia and Montgomery County, delivering not just flowers but a message of love, companionship, and care. The effort aimed to transform Valentine’s Day into a personable and memorable occasion for many older adults, reminding them that they are an integral and cherished part of the community.

Yocasta Lora, reflecting on the day's events, stated, "Valentine’s Day is more than a celebration of romantic love; it’s an opportunity to show we care and remember those who might feel isolated. Our volunteers brought smiles, warmth, and a sense of belonging to many, proving that small gestures can have a big impact on someone’s day."

This outreach is a testament to the power of community and the difference that dedicated volunteers can make in the lives of others. It underscores the importance of friendship and connection, particularly for older adults who may not always have the company they wish for on such a day of love and affection.
