There are only two weeks left in the 2018 South Dakota legislative session but our work in Pierre is not done!
With your help, House Bill (HB) 1204, the Uniform Power of Attorney Act, passed in the House of Representatives by a 42-21 vote and moves over to the Senate for consideration.
HB 1204 is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Judiciary committee on Tuesday (February 27) and we expect similar opposition to what we faced in the House. We are asking for your help, again, in contacting the members of the committee and telling them to support HB 1204!
Also this week, AARP South Dakota testified in support of adopting Senate Bill (SB) 62, which provides for the notification related to a breach of certain data.
To refresh your memory, this bill is being brought by South Dakota Attorney General, Marty Jackley, and under the proposed legislation, an information holder must disclose a data breach to any resident of South Dakota whose personal information was acquired within 60 days. Find more details on this legislation here.
South Dakota is one of the last states in the country to adopt a data breach notification bill and AARP South Dakota believes this bill is an important tool for the consumers of South Dakota. With AARP South Dakota’s support, SB 62 passed in the House Judiciary committee this week and moves onto the House floor for consideration.
Please, take action this weekend to contact your legislators in the Senate and tell them to vote YES on HB 1204 to enact the Uniform Power of Attorney Act! Please also ask you legislators about this issue when you see them in your community or at local legislative coffees. Click here for a list of all upcoming cracker barrel events.
