Our State, Our Future: Virtual Townhalls

This year Oregonians will choose a new Governor, and AARP Oregon is offering a four-part virtual townhall series for Oregonians statewide to make their voices heard as they learn about critical issues impacting the 50+ community. Join us from June through September for Our State, Our Future townhalls. These interactive events will feature subject matter experts and provide participants the opportunity to share their perspectives and experiences on issues that matter to them.

Livable Communities: Housing & Transportation | July 14, 2022 from 12:00 pm-1:15 pm
According to AARP research, 80% of people over 50 want to remain in their own home or community as they age. Affordability, accessibility, and variety in housing, as well as safe, reliable and affordable transportation options are critical to healthy and sustainable aging in place. Join this virtual townhall to share your experience and learn about the key housing and transportation issues that impact 50+ Oregonians, including the high rate of pedestrian deaths among older adults and the housing cost burdens faced by both renters and homeowners.

Financial Resilience: Age-Discrimination, Retirement, Consumer Protection | August 11, 2022 from 12:00 pm-1:15 pm
Over half of Oregon workers age 45+ are extremely or very concerned about having enough income or savings to retire and two-thirds believe older workers face age discrimination in today’s workplace. The pandemic has impacted the economy and caused significant hardships. People 50+, especially women, African Americans and Latinos, have been disproportionately impacted by job loss and loss of savings. Join this virtual townhall to share your experience and learn about key issues related to financial resilience.

Creating an Age-Friendly State | September 15, 2022 from 12:00 pm-1:15 pm
We are a rapidly aging society, and for the first time in history, older adults are projected to outnumber children by 2034. As one of the fastest-aging states in the West, Oregon’s question is how to advance statewide goals and policies that support aging well and helping us thrive in our communities. Join this virtual townhall to share your experience and learn about how Oregon can become an age-friendly state by creating a comprehensive plan that supports living and aging well.
