Open Streets Promote Safe, Walkable Community

Posted on 06/16/25 by Mary Michaels

A livable community is a place where people of all ages and abilities are able to enjoy a quality of life enhanced by vibrant public spaces, opportunities for social connection, safe places to walk and bike and more.

Open Streets events are a way to show how a community can reimagine public spaces like a street when it is closed to vehicles and opened up for pedestrians.

Two more Open Streets are happening in Downtown Sioux Falls this summer.

Friday, July 4 - Red, White & Downtown
Join us on Phillips Avenue between 6th-7th Streets starting at 5p.m. for family-friendly activities, live music, local vendors and food trucks. The event is a celebration of Independence Day and a chance to experience downtown Sioux Falls in a new way. Then, make plans to go to the Levitt at the Falls for the AARP South Dakota-sponsored concert featuring Andrea Ross and Her Orchestra.

Friday, August 1 - DTSF Art & Wine Walk
Phillips Avenue between 10th and 11th Streets will be closed to traffic and transformed into a walkable art corridor—enhancing the experience with live art, music, and a safe, community-focused atmosphere. Adults age 21+ can Purchase a punch card to enjoy a selection of wines at various stops throughout downtown.

AARP South Dakota is proud to collaborate with Downtown Sioux Falls and the City of Sioux Falls for these events that enhance walkability and foster a vibrant community atmosphere.
