North Dakota homeowners could be eligible for property tax credits if they meat certain income requirements. Also, renters could also qualify for a refund program if they meet eligibility requirements.

Homestead Property Tax Credit
The homestead property tax credit is a North Dakota property tax credit that reduces the property taxes of those who qualify.

Those eligible are individuals who are 65 years of age or older, or individuals of any age who are permanently and totally disabled. Your income has to be $42,000 or less per year.

Homeowners must file an application for a property tax credit with your local assessor or county director of tax equalization by February 1 (or as soon thereafter as possible) in the year in which your property is assessed and for which the credit is requested. If you are permanently and totally disabled, you will need to file a physician's certificate with the state Tax Department.

Renter's Refund
The Renter's Refund program falls under the Homestead Property Tax Credit program. It provides renters a partial refund on rent paid for living quarters or for a mobile home lot. Refunds can be up to, but not exceeding, $400. The Renter's Refund is available to individuals who are 65 years of age or older, or individuals who are permanently and totally disabled.

Renters must meet the same income requirements as homestead tax credit applicants.

To apply, renters must file a Renter's Refund Tax Application (application available mid-January through May 31 of each year). The application must be filed with the state Tax Department before June 1. If you are permanently and totally disabled, you will need to file a physician's certificate with the state Tax Department.
